DHCP Setup
DHCP is Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol, which provides IP addresses to devices that request one on your network. Its a good way to give every device a consistent IP number, without causing collisions.
When setting up DHCP, you should provide the strictest policy possible for devices, and do not allow unknown devices to have an IP address.
In general, we recommend these rules:
Do not enable DHCP for the WAN interface.
Use static mappings for major services, appliances, and desktops.
If possible, do not give out addresses to unknown clients. In OpnSense and pfSense, there is an option called Deny unknown clients.
For Wifi and IoT devices, do not allow unknown clients, but use static mapping as above, and turn on Deny unknown clients.
For IoT devices, set the gateway address to the IP address. This prevents those devices from communicating to the internet. If using the same IP for the gateway is not possible, use an unused IP on the same network.
